@RayDunzl is a woman. Don't judge him by his looks cause his quite competent. @Blumlein 88 was a woman, very hot looking, but he had a change of heart (and sex) recently. Also very competent though. And then there is our host, @amirm - he's got both, look and brain. :D
What are you talking about? My avatar is Pandora. You can't tell by the little avatar pic, but she is sitting on an old style stereo receiver with other talismans of the chaos released by modern technology.

Why so many female avatars..........because women are much more attractive than men.

*raises hand*

I'm not really sure what got me into the hobby, but it was definitely around 2010, when I was in middle school. I have seen literally no other women here or on other audiophile forums. It's a shame, really, because audio is the coolest thing ever. (Also, DSP is the shit! What EE doesn't smile when working with DSP stuff, heh =)

I'll definitely brainwash - er, I mean show the light - to my children when I have them to get them into audio. I grew up with a screwdriver in my toy box and I think that's the secret for creating engineers these days.

As for avatars, I think people just pick something they like to look at. I only started using my actual face pretty recently because I liked the anonymity, but now I'm trying to establish myself professionally and I thought why not.

I see that you're in Fremont, CA, maybe its a geographic location thing.

Plenty of ladies who are in the engineering field(s) in the Bay area. Be it software or hardware engineering.

A friend who is also staying in Fremont is a software patent attorney, her previous career incarnation was a software engineer.

As a strength and conditioning coach, and as a singer.

I'd like to see a poll here about who's an engineer and who isn't. I'm definitely not an engineer. I tried a CS class at Cal and hated it passionately.

Engineer: Traditional viewpolnt

The titles Software Engineer and Recording Engineer are questionable. The former is a Computer Programmer unless holding an engineering discipline/s degree qualification in a specific field,
and the latter is an artistic Console/equipment Operator unless having higher qualification in knowledge and understanding of audio, electronic and electrical aspects of the process.

engineer cf Engineer?

Comments?

Do you mean EE or any other engineer? My opinion would be that only EE matters.

Btw, I am an EE engineer but as I specialised in Computer Science much of the analog electronics and audio stuff is only vaguely known to me. For example, I wouldn't be able to design an amplifier scheme by myself, but when I see one I have relatively good understanding how it works. On the other hand I'm pretty good with digital electronics and processing.

To me the difference between the Engineers is whether the degree qualification was obtained thru an University (public or private) belongings to the Ministry of Education or thru an one belonging to the Ministry of Industry.
Engineers coming out from the latter have a much easier way of integrating within the industry, environment they're used to frequent during the four or five university course years thanks to the several stages they take within the industries (including the audio ones) that patronize the university system.
That's as it works in the Old Europe at least.

Well, my graduate school focus was financial engineering, which has absolutely nothing to do with what most would consider 'engineering.' Means I can keep up with the math and stats and all that, but I have to admit a lot of flat out ignorance when it comes to electronics and circuitry.

In an attempt to figure some shit out, I got an older scope and plan to actually start poking around and trying to learn enough to keep up a little better around here...

There is an amazing knowledge base here to learn from.

Before that we must figure out first if you are man or woman because your avatar is quite vague on that topic. :D

Yes, apart from ships, the use of "engineer" for someone who operates equipment is pretty much an American thing. As an European, "engineer" means someone with an higher academic degree in some form of engineering science.

It makes for quite a difference. There is nothing wrong with learning by practice and vocational education, but a solid theoretical background does help with stuff that is counter-intuitive (as a lot of digital technology tends to be).

From my anecdotal evidence / experience women aren't that interested in hi-fi; they just want something that works when they want to use earphones or listen to music.

It seems like us guys are also into the technical aspect, aesthetics, technology, having some kind of bragging rights, spitballing on different topics etc. lol

I know a fair bit of women who are into technical stuff, and many men who are totally clueless about technology, but you might be right about the "bragging rights" part.

Well, are you looking for objective proof? I'm not posting junk pics...not here at least...
