Maybe it would be helpful to consider practical matters, such as whether people will walk over it in their outside shoes, will it be exposed to bright- or direct sunlight, and whether there are pets to consider. And in some cases, maybe a less expensive machine-woven carpet made from harder-wearing fibers would be the best pick.
Random thought: I visited a famous mosque, and one of the points of interest was a white silk rug, a gift from the Ayatollah Khomeini. I recall thinking it looked very nice and plush, but of course such things are not designed to be trodden upon or used as a dog's bed so much as to cushion the knees of the faithful!
FWIW, a photo from 1998 of carpets being hand-woven in Urumqi, in China's Xinjiang region. I imagine that the process is pretty much the same everywhere.
