Who has any sort of electronic repair equipment/workbench and what do you have. Post pics if you like.

Moving day came and I still had my equipment rack. 800-Got-Junk hauled it away. Sad... but not as sad as taking 500 LPs to Salvation Army. Downsizing sux.

Speakers from last century that you love

One of the best things about reference-grade speakers from the previous century is they're way more affordable today. I've always wanted to own a pair of Thiel towers and last year I was searching pretty hard for a pair of 3.5s to buy. In December eBay sent me a notice that a pair of CS7...

Who has any sort of electronic repair equipment/workbench and what do you have. Post pics if you like.

I put this rack on marketplace for just $200 and 2 weeks later I still have it. I guess there's just not that many tinkerers left.

Who has any sort of electronic repair equipment/workbench and what do you have. Post pics if you like.

I'm a metrologist so I'm accustomed to having nice gear at hand...at work. At home when I need to tinker on whatever has found is way to my workbench I use this collection of old stuff i installed in a rack next to my basement workbench. It's not expensive or high-tech but it does provide the...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

Or not. Why do you like like AC near your high-gain prepre? Rather counter-intuitive, isn't it?

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

If it hasn't already been done by somebody I would like to see the AC part of the internal power supply removed and modified to use an external quiet DC supply. Many other preamps over the years have been modified like this. When I bought mine I intended to do that hack but life interfered and...

"Breaking Speakers' Hoffman iron law"¹: Dual Force Cancellation Subwoofers Vs Magnetic Negative Springs.

It's my first exposure to this thread, and product. Initially I thought it was mfr bs/hype. Their marketing prose made me reach for my hip-boots. But the more I read, the more the concept of variable (and *controllable*) magnetic attraction made perfect sense. I see the speaker is now $499...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

I appreciate this review. I'm nearing retirement & moving. I've got a simple digital system set up in my new place but I haven't decided yet if I'm going to continue with LPs. I bought the very cheap X5 to eventually compare to the phono input of my Wiim Ultra. When LP "died" I sold my 3...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

It blows my mind there are so many who argue against listening to a piece of audio gear before buying.

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

This talk of vinyl's horrible shortcomings reminds me of another remarkable ability of the ear/brain mechanism: Discrimination. I can easily "tune out" clicks & pops and enjoy the music behind it. Seems like allot of people are unable to hear beyond the surface noise. I wonder if they can see...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

Well if you really believe all audio equipment that measured well on the bench in the 60's & 70's were audibly perfect then what advances have we actually made in 60 years? "Hindsight is 20/20"... Do you think ANYONE believes his subjective opinions today? Will today's gear be judged as...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

A little perspective... Hirsch first began publishing his reviews in 1961. A large push-back to his "if it measures the same, it sounds the same" approach soon formed when the likes of J. Gordon Holt (1962) and Harry Pearson (1973) started publishing their own magazines seeking to better...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

It's really not much different than when Julian Hirsch was the audio science God. Everything he reviewed sounded exactly the same, provided it met some minimum measurement standards. Didn't matter if it was Mark Levinson or Sears Silvertone--it sounded "perfect".

Tell Us If You Use 3.1, 5.1, 7.1 9.1 system?

Living room AV is 5.1. Basement is simple stereo + TV and I find I don't miss the extra channels. My future home will/does have basic stereo, with a large TV. There too I don't miss the surround, and won't need the sub once I move my big speakers in. I have a big open concept living room with...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

You put full faith in meters, I trust my ears. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind. Here I learn from the measurements, then from the pages of reviews & comments describing what is heard.

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

You're confusing my posts with others. I've never said one peep about changing op-amps, and have never done this.

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

But of course it doesn't. Abysmally terrible measurements can weed out units that that actually sound bad, but once you get into the "acceptable" range of measured performance, meters can't tell the difference between the 1st chair violin soloist and the 2nd chair. Ears CAN hear the difference...

    I'm happy--and that's the point, isn't it?

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

I have something much better--EARS. They tell me the Fosi is as tonally neutral as my old PS Audio preamp, and a bit quieter. The S/N is of course way more than is needed for vinyl. But I find the soundstage width, depth, and focus to be better. Tell me how oscilloscope & FFT would analyse that.

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

My hum issue was my own doing. My Rega RB300 arm grounds the tonearm via the L channel gnd wire (somewhat unusual). My Oracle TT has a thumbscrew underneath to ground the chassis. Connecting this to the Fosi created a ground loop.
