Making my own RCA -> XLR cables

Note two: The above is for a RCA output to an XLR input. Because there are three & a half types of XLR output stages, no single arrangement will work for all three.

Making my own RCA -> XLR cables

XLR Pin 1 is the shield, you may not want to connect it to the RCA shell/sleeve.

1 foot solid silver conductor interconnect vs. 0.5 foot Mogami W2964 interconnect

Yep, for the best RCA analog interconnects, use a coax cable with a heavy braided shield. Coax cables with a foil shield (and maybe a light braid) are best at cable TV frequencies.

1 foot solid silver conductor interconnect vs. 0.5 foot Mogami W2964 interconnect

Actually, because the conductors used by audiophiles in cables and cords are often of different diameters, there is no way of determining if the conductor is Silver, Gold or Copper by electrical measurement of same length wires. You would need to measure the conductor's diameter or by visual...

1 foot solid silver conductor interconnect vs. 0.5 foot Mogami W2964 interconnect

At a gigahertz polished Silver plating is great. Because at that frequency, skin depth is so shallow that all of the signal rides in the plating, the Copper core only has mechanical functions. Silver plating has been used in cables for very high frequency applications for a long time. So...

    Speaker "Speed"

If you name two (tested) loudspeakers, one with 'speed' and one without. We could examine what measured parameters are very different.

1 foot solid silver conductor interconnect vs. 0.5 foot Mogami W2964 interconnect

Well a coat-hanger won't replace a coax cable. But they could be replaced with those cables that come packed in many low budget products.

1 foot solid silver conductor interconnect vs. 0.5 foot Mogami W2964 interconnect

Notes: the Radio Frequency Characteristic Impedance doesn't come into play at frequencies much below one megahertz. (unless your cables are miles long) The central conductor can be a very small thickness or high AWG number, because the load is in the neighborhood of 10,000 Ohms. The center...

1 foot solid silver conductor interconnect vs. 0.5 foot Mogami W2964 interconnect

With analog audio interconnects, the central conductor (RCA) or conductors (XLR) can be: solid Gold, Gold plated Copper, solid Silver, Silver plated Copper, Copper, super duper Copper or Copper Clad Aluminum. They will all sound and measure the same. Differences (if any) will be in the noise and...

    Question about cables

As one of our forum members would say: Everyone is entitled to their preferences. Just don't claim that they sound better or more accurate.

Jensen CI-2RR IsoMax Stereo Audio Isolator

Jensen has always made excellent transformers. This transformer can solve many power line related noises and no it won't degrade audio quality.

    Simple listening test for audiophiles

That's not the correct way to do an AB/X test. In a good test, the listener has control of the music, the section of the track, the volume and the sequence & when the switch is done.

How do I wire unbalanced outputs to balanced inputs?

Yep, reading some of those off-the-wall audiophile forums could confuse a person.

    Simple listening test for audiophiles

I would think that trained (ears only) listeners would hear meaningful differences between many phono cartridge/pre-amp combinations. But to do a useful test, you need to do a high quality digital rip of each combination. Then time sync and level match each file.

How do I wire unbalanced outputs to balanced inputs?

While typical RCA outputs are at a lower voltage (not power) level than typical XLR outputs, most input stages have enough gain adjustment range to deal with this without adding noise. * * * * * * * * * * * Phantom power is only available on some (microphone) inputs, it's never available on an...

A DC Blocker to help stop transformer HUM

In a residential situation most of the appliances and such that might cause a DC offset, have an intermittent use pattern. Even electric car chargers and solar panels. So you would notice the hum/buzz coming and going.
