Well ok, so you know a lot about this then, right? Can you link us to some reading material? People here won't believe in mechanical "burn in" without any proof, it's ASR.

I'm not sure what "similar" is supposed to be, but if you are looking for Sony TDA " sound " , just try getting a device with these vintage chips. I have one. It sounds a tad rolled off, but otherwise fine.

I fear you are wrong. You are putting all your effort into hearing a "tonality". A good functioning DAC over 96-100dB SINAD is extremely unliky to present any "tonality" whatsoever, as long as it's not rolling off frequencies on either side of the audible band..

I think some manufacturers also talk about 'pseudo' balanced in which there is no additional output voltage, but there is some crosstalk or noise benefit in using the differential connector. Nothing that could be actually audible, though..
