Sam Fender. Singer-songwriter-guitar player from Newcastle, England.
Knew about him after his first release, "Hypersonic Missiles," a few years ago. But his 2021 release, "Seventeen Going Under," is a magnificent record that is my Album of the Year for 2021. Writes lyrics about growing up poor in the North East of England, about societal trends, effed-up politicians, youth suicide, etc. Has been called the "English Springsteen," which is a bit of a stretch, but you get the gist.
The dude has a great voice, almost Jeff Buckley-like in some tracks. A lot of influences in the sound -- Springsteen (lots of sax!), The Cure, The Strokes, The War on Drugs, etc.
Really dig this kid.
