the cheapest most cost-effective way to reduce consumption of energy is to put foam surrounds on every electrical outlet in an exterior wall

take the cover plat off the outlet using the single screw - you will see a hole into which the outlet itself lies - the foam goes in between that and the cover and seals it off

post a pic for more info

one thing that keeps me from buying McIntosh is the ugly blue lighting scheme
(FWIW) I wouldn't call it ugly as much as garish. Conspicuous consumption -- that nouveau riche thing.

Just thought I'd slip a photo of our mudroom in for illustrative purposes...

McIntosh isn't for me but the MC462 is the 2nd highest SINAD based on the running tally at ASR. Only AHB2 is higher but the Mc is 450 watts from 2-8 ohms. Sure it's $9k new and weighs over 100 lbs but it'll retain a lot of its value over time. To get that power at that SINAD you'll need to spend how many thousand on monoblocks? It's not just a pretty or gaudy case depending on your view.

I am a fan.
Robust
Accurate
Heritage
Resale (not selling mine) 22 years ago 3k, average now on eBay 3500-4000.

They started out making mil spec and industrial amplifiers, not necessarily audio or consumer. Driving machines, flight simulators, etc. It morphed into consumer.

I recently took a good look at my MA6300 phono section, good specs. It uses a high accuracy AD op amp and a discrete RIAA section. imo no need for a separate phono amp. It has gain of 52 dB and SN of 81 at my cartridge level of 3.5 mV (rated sensitivity is 2.5 and SN of 90 at 10 mV). With my cartridge 28 dB of OL headroom (90 mV).

It looks old school, it's a love/hate thing, but the sound is good, by that I mean accurate with low signal degradation. I am not nouveau riche', and as plain Jane vanilla as you get. Lol

Beautiful VU meters and the high price tags leads to a substantial amount of subjective praise.

^I'm not sure this is true. I recently installed those foam gaskets to all the outlet covers (exterior walls) in our house and the result was not as good as I thought it would be. After doing a bit of research I bought a can of spray foam and sealed all the wall cavities around and behind the outlet boxes. Now THAT made a huge difference, no more air leakage. It was very easy to do. I think the can of foam cost about $8 from the local home store.

My only experience with McIntosh is with a couple of their mobile/car audio amplifiers that I bought new in the mid 90's. I sold them for a bit more than I paid for them in the early 2000's.

I heap substantial praise on this amp which doesn't know what a meter is, and is not high price. Sometimes it really is value for money. ;)

I have & like a pair of restored MC-30's. Powered by 6L6! What could possibly go wrong?

I'm surprised and disappointed that the light box does not have a dimmer knob with a big blue meter showing the light intensity.

Look for the upgrade later this year, at a mere $2500 USD.

This is what stores put on display with their overpriced Mc gear.
