I somehow missed the intro round when I joined and started posting. I guess I was too excited about all these great threads...
My father got me interested in HiFi when I was 8, that is roughly 50 years ago, and he was generous in helping me with equipment. Soon I had a Dual player with a magnetic system (!) feeding Canton LE600s via a Grundig receiver. An Uher 4400 taught me that 0.15% wow&flutter (DIN) are audible. Direct-to-disc sounded so superb, my Grundig would do simulated Quadro which sounded great in the early 70‘s. The industry was desperately looking for a decent recording media, friends were listening to pre-recorded 38cm/s tapes on an Revox machine, PCM mastered metal cuts were for the less fortunates.
And then came the CD. A bit a spoiler as all the cover art went away. My interest turned to video and I collected Laserdiscs. Loved the multichannel 5.1 part and was totally absorbed seeing a high quality video production like Quincy Jone’s & Frank Sinatra‘s LA is my Lady. After I bought my first DVD player in 96, I collected multichannel DVDs and upgraded to a projector and 6 identical boxes, culminating in a Blu-ray with a concert in 3D on with 6x48/24. That was heaven, but the industry did not follow. I added a Mch Dirac box but am back to streaming now, having spread 6 Raspis with various DACs across two places, feeding them with Roon, my CDs and Qobuz. Occasionally I search for Multichannel in Qobuz and count to 10 or so. And then I watch Apollo 11 to check on another gone technology.
