Audirvana caches the entire song to the drive and if it's a playlist multiple tunes. I was playing Qobuz tunes via the internet and the modem lights went off due to an internet outage. I thought there goes the music? Instead, the music continued to play for 7 minutes while the internet was down and continued playing like nothing happened once the internet was back on. The Qobuz playlist never stopped while using Audirvana as the playback app. I imagine there has to be some limit but I was really shocked how much music it caches.
I have seen HEOS, the Qobuz app and Tidal all fail within a few seconds of an internet outage. It's really a great feature to have that amount of caching to the drive. It keeps the music playback on tap!
Try turning your modem off while playing back music and see how long it lasts. My bet is many apps from the on-line services don't cache much at all.
