It is not known how many hours, but I think it's over 200 hours.
contact spot size 4.7mkm x 35 mkm

Vertical Tracking Force 1.0g = Tracking ability 90mkm
Vertical Tracking Force 1.2g = Tracking ability 100mkm

RIAAs for present MM cartridges need R at 25k 27k 29k 31k 33k 35k 47k and capacitance from 50 to 800 pF… at 50pF steps to have any chance of flattening the present MMs…since no one has that , variable/ custom loading plugs should be standard for a good RIAA

And ideally the phono pre should start out at 100K or more, to facilitate... and C as low as possible...

I made up my own C & R plugs...

I would be very curious to see an Ortofon quintet; Many define it as "open" and detailed but my blue is anything but open
Thanks for all the work you are doing

I took some measurements of a Quintet Bronze that I owned briefly.

Don't think I ever posted them, will try to do so later tonight.

If I recall correctly, it had somewhat of a downward slope.

SHURE V15 IV Jico SAS/B

1703937764402.png

INFO
  • Cartridge: SHURE V15 IV Jico SAS/B
  • Stylus condition: <5 hours, Azimuth optimized in headshell (Hitachi with a home made fulcrum)
  • Test record: ClearAudio TRS-1007 side A track 1&2 L/R stereo
  • Turntable and arm: Sony SP-212 from junk sale,30USD but speed is correct Peak wow 0.11%
  • Tracking force: 1g
  • Phono stage and loading settings: Cambridge CP2 220pF+125+5=250pF 47k. ADC Tascam 144mk2
  • Recording: no adjustment on balance,Azimuth adjustment on cartridge quite alot needed, 16 bit 96kHz.Recording characteristic RIAA.
Comments
Quite surprised and maybe disappointed to the the JICO peak missing, and getting a high end drop instead, was planning to load it for a flat response. Maybe better with lower Capacitance
But when I see the may 1981 review plots my response with CA TRS-1007 are quite similar or even better than the original
Nice low distortion
Crosstalk OK,even better on Denon records below

I also have a Hyper elliptical Tonar 6445 for this cartridge, but do not want to disturb the nice setup I have now.

Please comment on the HYPEREL 6445 VTA/SRA in the spoiler below, should I send it back?

Not optimized, seem to have higher distortion than SAS/B, and the SRA/VTA seems wring even with horizontal arm, missing VTA adjustement osn Sony PS-212

Vary Flat, have not seen the DENON records as flat before, they are is more like the CA TRS-1007 normally, myab it is the low tracking force 1gram?

All Jico SAS havw a visual steep slope, som youtub videos state VTA to be 31 degrees, 11 degrees off the standard!! Why on earth do that JICO this?
My measurement of VTA also show close to 30 degrees.
This fail adds 2 % extra intermodulation distortion to all music.... that will be audible..

Very nice. In this case you might need 60k. How does it sound?

Low distortion. Reminds me I need a new JICO SAS.

According to the HiFi Choice tests done in the 80's on the V15IVHE, the response was very similar to the SASB version tested above, flat to 10 - 12khz and a gentle rolloff after. I can't remember the test disc but it could be the CBS (I'll have to check) and capacitance was moderate, also from memory. The IV seemed more load-immune than the III or V models also and mine with medium hours on it is an odd one to come to terms with subjectively, as it takes some time to acclimatise to for some reason. Once adjusted for, it seems quite truthful in tone and perspectives, just not very 'demonstrative' and 'Choice marked it way down because of this. Apologies for a purely subjective post here...

Just checked the 1979 'Choice book - Responses done at 220 and 330pF capacitance for the V15IV and a variety of test discs were used )but not stated for this cartridge)0o including the Shure TTR103 which needed no equalisation. Other discs were B&O A2007, JVC TRS 1007, B&K QR2009, CBS STR100, 112

@Balle Clorin

Re VTA: Make sure your SRA is correct first. 1 g VTF might be to little, suspension compression is too light. Range is 1.0-1.5 g. Suspension might change after a few hours play also.

SRA seems around 94°. Adjust VTF up and check again.
