Frequency response on axis (red curve) measured at a distance of 2 m. The green line shows the transmission range from 42 Hz to 22.6 kHz. In grey, the ripple between 100 Hz and 10 kHz with 1.8 dB. Below are the curves of the factory presets with shelf filters for location adjustment and with optional high-pass filter.

Anyone know how Sound & Recording gets their review samples? Do they buy them or companies provide them?

I can't speak specifically for the audio world, but I did a lot of hardware and game reviews back in the day. I wandered trade show floors, chatting up every marketing and PR guy I could find. Got lots of hardware to review that way. Your site is legit. They might not want to give you stuff, though, because you'll find their flaws.

Hmmz... CDN $1546.63 - $1579.99 each for a grand total of ~$3159.98 / pair at the local retailer.

https://www.amazon.ca/JBL-Professional-705P-Studio-Monitor/dp/B01MZFU8QE
https://www.long-mcquade.com/94736/...act-Bi-Amplified-Master-Reference-Monitor.htm

• 2-channel Class-D amplifier HF 250W / LF 250W
• 12 bands of Room EQ, 8 bands of User EQ

It would be nice to see what some EQ will do for them.

Cheaper to cross the border and buy. I bet they respond wonderfully to Dirac.

Sorry to spam this. I'm just happy times to see how well they perform.

You can buy them from any pro audio dealer for virtually the same price as the US price after exchange rate. If you’re in the GTA, checkout Spectacular Sounds. Only shmucks buy pro audio from long and mcquade, it’s a good place to get a selmer sax or some drum kit and that’s it.

Like most people, through networking. So probably free or (indefinite) loan.

It is. I have a second sample which the owner also sent me. I plan to measure that to see if we are dealing with sample variations, instrumentation, or golden samples.

Maybe the one you have is broken-in.

@MZKM is sleeping but was kind enough to compute the scores for me:

Preference Rating
SCORE: 4.7
SCORE w/ subwoofer: 6.6

The smoothness of the predicted in-room (hump at 1500Hz and dip at 2000Hz) is holding it back.

Do you know by heart what is the PIR weight in Preference score?

It would be interesting to know the reason of the deviations in the bass and especially mid (the highs deviation is known and imho not so big or important) between the ASR and S&R on-axis frequency response measurements:

If the effort isn't too much for you, could you please measure the harmonic distortions and the CSD with the bass reflex port closed/clogged.

In my opinion, JBL has sacrificed a lot of potential by not damping the resonances in favor of sound pressure in the low bass.

Would be interesting to see how the speaker present itself if the cabinet damping had been done properly (The cabinet resonances would of course still be there, but wouldn't carry as much weight in the measurements when the bass-reflex port is closed).

Amir,
man what a great surprise to see this 1st thing this morning. Question, I noticed the green light at the front of the speaker is on in the picture. That indicates the high pass filter is active, was that just for the pic, or did you measure with it on? LMK when you want the 708s. Also, I have a decent pair of Genelec 1031's which I would love you to test.. They're in so many studios, etc.

For clarity on naming of the JBL's: it seems "P" means powered and "I" means installed (or install-able I suppose). I guess by the same logic you could define them as "portable or integrated"... i.e. outboard amps mean speakers aren't nearly as likely to be moved.

@Thomas savage - unfortunately that seems to be the case with pro-audio gear fairly often. If it's one of the really good ones... it works for decades even when abused. If not, it might not work at all - or might begin failing almost immediately. Commodity products with lower target prices especially. Sucks that one of yours died, and I totally agree that having to return/repair anything regularly is often so irritating it overshadows the good points the device may have.

I'm sure having next to no ventilation on that amp can't be helping longevity much.
